The Transitions Program aims to identify the strengths and interests of individual participants to better prepare them for employment and meaningful community involvement beyond high school. This program provides a full year of classroom learning, enriching community volunteerism, job shadowing, and onsite summer work experience to build the confidence and skill sets of young adults on the spectrum. Participants are paired in groups of 3 and expected to take part in the Transitions Program for 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for the duration of the program year which includes a 4-month onsite summer work experience from May till August. Some flexibility in scheduling may be required.
The Transitions Program is tied closely with the operations of ASNL’s second social enterprise Good Roots Gardening which includes physical labor both inside and outside, in all weather, though gardening and greenhouse work. Although necessary training will be provided, candidates must be interested and comfortable in learning and working in this particular environment. Along with onsite work, participants also take part in volunteerism with a variety of community organizations throughout the year. These volunteer opportunities provide valuable experience in understanding expectations, social interactions in different environments, and what types of work participants are interested in. Working in small groups allows participants to build relationships and social capacity in a work-related setting.
This program is designed for individuals, aged 18+, who have a desire to build on their employability skills. The Transitions Program utilizes check-in style supervision in numerous community environments, therefore, it is best suited to individuals who can complete tasks with minimal supervision, are comfortable in a variety of environments, and enjoy working as part of a team.
The Transitions Program is funded through the Department of Advanced Education and Skills, Government of NL.
